Repair First, or a New Unit Straight Away?

Three questions settle it: how old the unit is, where the fault sits, and whether parts would cost more than a new system. A five-year-old gas unit with a failed igniter is a repair. A fifteen-year-old electric tank weeping from the base has nothing left to save.

We diagnose before we quote, and the diagnosis is where the decision gets made:

Age

A storage tank past ten years is on borrowed time, and money spent on it tends to be deferred, not saved.

Where it leaks

Water from a valve or fitting is fixable. Water from the tank shell is not.

Parts and availability

Some older units need parts that cost more than the tank is worth keeping.

Running costs

An old electric storage unit can cost more per year to run than a modern replacement.

A unit worth saving gets repaired; one that is finished gets a replacement quote.

How Do You Know a Tank Is Finished?

Tanks give warning before they fail outright, and catching the signs saves a cold shower at the worst moment:

  • A wet patch or a trickle at the base of the tank
  • Lukewarm water when the unit is set hot, which points to a failing element or burner
  • Rust staining at the relief valve or pipe fittings
  • The unit short-cycling, switching on and off more than it used to
  • A sudden drop in pressure on the hot side only

Any one of these earns a booking. Two together point to a unit on its way out.

What Drives the Price of Hot Water Work?

"They gave us a prompt quote with different options and helped us with a temporary hot water tank while the new system arrived and was installed." Karen

The system you choose sets most of the figure, and the rest follows:

  • The system A like-for-like electric swap is a smaller job than moving to gas or a heat pump, which can bring new pipe runs and electrical work with it.
  • Access A tank in an open laundry is a quicker job than one wedged under a stairs cavity or on the far side of a roof.
  • The old unit Removal and disposal sit in the quote as their own line.
  • The timing A replacement booked for a weekday costs less than one done after hours, and you hear both figures.

Every system type has its own fit, and the right one depends on the house, the fuel available and the running cost you want:

One Renovation Wave, One Retirement Wave

Tanks of one age

A large group of Kahibah's postwar timber and fibro homes were renovated in the 1990s, and the tanks put in back then are wearing out side by side. Interwar weatherboard cottages and later brick veneer make up the rest of the housing, each with its own tank position and pipe runs.

The swap has already started

Area figures record 1,569 heat pump units and 1,441 solar systems fitted in the district, a sign that plenty of homes have left plain electric storage behind.

The valley sharpens the choice

Sheltered by bush, the valley turns colder on winter nights than the suburbs by the water, and a cold snap can finish a tank that was already marginal. Then the booking is a replacement, not a repair.

What Happens on the Booking

From your call to hot water running again, the job runs in a set order:

  1. 01

    Ring or send the form

Call (02) 4063 3469 or use the form to explain the fault. We ask enough to bring the right equipment the first time.

  2. 02

    A fixed price first

A plumber inspects the job and names a fixed figure up front. Nothing gets started until you give the go-ahead.

  3. 03

The fault is diagnosed and the repair or replacement carried out, with a loaner tank going in if the new unit is on order.

  4. 04

    Covered for a year

Every job carries our 365-day warranty on all work. If something we did isn't right, ring the same number.

When we're not the right call: a unit still inside the maker's own warranty goes back to the manufacturer first, since their repairer handles those claims.

Questions From the Hot Water Run

My hot water went cold overnight. Is that a repair or a replacement?

It depends on the fault. A failed element or valve on a younger unit is a repair job, while a tank leaking from its shell is finished. We diagnose first, then quote both paths so the call is yours.

Do you install heat pump hot water in Kahibah?

Yes. Heat pumps suit the shaded blocks here, where a storage tank works hardest through the cold months and costs the most to run. Sizing, placement and the swap itself are on the heat pump page.

Can we still have showers while the new system is on order?

Yes. A loaner tank can go in on the same visit, so the house keeps hot water while the replacement unit arrives. It comes off the job once the new system is in and running.

What happens to the old tank when you take it out?

It is disconnected, drained and carted off for scrap as part of the job, so nothing is left sitting in the yard or on the verge.
